Sydney, Aug 27 (IANS) Taking her first international flight to be with her husband in Australia, a young Indian woman Wednesday gave birth to a healthy baby boy on the flight from Hong Kong to Adelaide.

The Cathay Pacific plane made an unscheduled landing in Darwin at 8.30 a.m., where Royal Darwin hospital staff were ready to rush the mother and baby to the hospital.

Paramjit Kaur, 29, was flying from Punjab to be with her husband, a taxi driver in Adelaide.

"Our guess is that she was 34 weeks pregnant. Three passengers on board helped deliver the child around 5.30 a.m. this morning and the plane landed in Darwin around 8.30 a.m.," a spokesperson for Royal Darwin Hospital told IANS.

"The baby is healthy and weighs 2.7 kg. He is in a special care nursery. The mother is well and has spent the day recuperating," the spokesperson added.

Paramjit's husband is flying to Darwin to be with his wife and newborn son.
