While some students are keen to enjoy a campus experience, others prefer shared living options. Students can choose from either a room share or shared living in an apartment, or a terrace house. Shared accommodation is normally more affordable and can cost between $150 and $350 a week, with a bond of a few weeks of rent depending on location and shared amenities.

Macquarie University's Damon Place apartments will offer students self-catered shared apartments and studio options. It has single or twin-share rooms with options for en suite and shared bathroom. The university has also formed a partnership with the recently built Iglu Chatswood, which also offers self-catered shared apartment and studio options from $319 to $419 a week.

CSU's fully furnished share cottages have six to eight single study bedrooms with a common kitchen, lounge, dining and shared bathrooms. Each bedroom is fitted with a private telephone and internet access. The university also facilitates a link between students and external providers through a website dedicated to accommodation solutions.

UNSW's residential communities director, Isabelle Creagh, says, "There is a fairly high turnover in the university's surrounding suburbs as students graduate and move on each year. Local real estate agents are familiar with the needs of students and know they are frequently on tight budgets."

University of Sydney has established linkages with homestay providers, offering a supportive environment for international students.

UTS has a housing off-campus officer to assist students seeking private accommodation. Recently, the university has also set up an accommodation buddy support programme, which allows the student seeking accommodation to have someone guide him/her when visiting potential housing.

There are dedicated websites to find shared housing like flatmates.com.au; furnishedproperty.com.au; austay.com; gumtree.com.au; easyroommate.com; share-accommodation.net; realestate.com.au.

Students can receive information about tenancy rights and off-campus rentals through their university's accommodation services office and website.
